Steve Hutensky grew up in a Jewish family in Brooklyn, New York. He lived with his mother, Julia, father, and sister after his parents divorced when he was young. Hutensky attended New York University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Arts and Science. In his early twenties, he began his career in the entertainment industry as a producer and director of television commercials, short films, and music videos. Hutensky went on to be hired in an executive position at a production company named Cinépix Film Properties in New York.

In 1998, Steve Hutensky created 5th Street Films to accept independent film projects and distribute them.
