Richard Liu Qiangdong is JD.com’s chairman, founder, and chief executive officer. JD.com was formally known as Jingdong when it was established in2004. Liu grew up in Chang’an, Jiangsu province, in China.
His descendants were well-off Chinese traders transporting goods in the 1900s along the Yangtze, but during his childhood, he lived in a village without electricity and running water. Richard Liu took care of his ailing maternal grandmother while his parents were working on the rice farm, and, in turn, she taught him to make maximum use of the little he had and to be industrious.
While in primary school and middle school, Richard Liu dreamed of traveling to see the world, including New York, Paris, and Beijing. Liu Qiangdong was also a higher achiever, which contributed to him gaining a spot at Renmin University for a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. He also has attained an MBA from China Europe International Business School. Further, Liu has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Windsor.
Richard Liu has built an e-Commerce company that is deemed the most successful and largest in the world. When unveiling the initial website, Liu spent days and nights designing his first domain and the code at the office. He solely handled all customer care relations and would send parcels to clients while climbing the corporate ladder to success. He learned how to utilize data to grow his business before a big marketing company did it for him. In 2007, Richard built a logistics system that would serve Chinese citizens all over the country to buy goods and appliances.
Through Liu, JD.com has made a name for itself by directly sourcing appliances and goods from the supplier and then reselling them to the shoppers. The company does this, unlike other e-commerce companies that provide sellers with a selling platform and leave them to do the delivery to their buyers. The company possesses over 3210 delivery stations and 1862 pick-up stations in China. The company’s mission is to position itself as a supply chain based on service and technology to create a more efficient, effective, and sustainable world.
