Born in Gladewater, Texas, Kelcy Warren is the last born in a family of four boys. His father, who worked as a gauger and a ditch digger for Sun Oil, was a fantastic man who always did his best to support his family. Warren’s mother never completed high school and worked in a department store. She always encouraged his sons to study hard and complete their education. Generally, his parents were loving and involved.
Although growing up in a small town was fun, warren’s household had financial worries. Therefore, together with his parents, they had to look for additional sources of income. The family’s idea was to open a trailer park to subsidize their income. On the other hand, warren hauled hay and worked at a petrol station where he earned 30 cents an hour.
When he was older, Kelcy Warren worked on oilfield-related jobs, including repair of oilfield leaks, pipeline construction, and as a welder’s helper. He saved a substantial amount of money that he would later use to pay for college.
Warren excelled in school, performed well, and was accepted to Arlington University to pursue a career in engineering. But, the freedom that came with college life was so great that he failed his first year.
Once his father learned of his failure, he was sent to work the night shift at a nearby junior college, and according to Kelcy Warren, that year marked his transition into adulthood. UTA accepted him back the following year, and he succeeded.
Engineering Professor Dr. Syed Qasim, aware of Warren’s failure in the first year, urged him to put more effort into his education and apply for a National Science Foundation Scholarship. He applied for a grant and received one for his analysis of methane gas production. Kelcy Warren gained self-confidence due to the encounter, which has been essential to his career.
