The educational experience at the academy is designed to create opportunities for students to become problem solvers and creative thinkers by offering programs in arts and design that allow students to develop a mastery of the academic disciplines they will use across their professional life.
Campus
Located in San Francisco, CA, Academy of Art University comprises approximately of buildings over 40 acres. The campus is comprised of six major structures: Historic Building (1890) by Ernest M. Skinner, 117 Golden Gate Avenue Building (1928) by Timothy Pflueger, South Building (1977) by I.M. Pei, North Building Addition (1979) by I.M., South Addition Phase 1-4 (1978), and North Addition Phase 5-6 (1988). In 2015 a new studio/classroom building was added, designed by Snøhetta, and opened in 2016.
Student life
Students participate in various traditional and unconventional extracurricular activities on campus, including but not limited to: art history tours, art clubs, art galleries, gallery talks, tea-tasting classes, theatrical productions, and traveling exhibitions.
Art Galleries
Over ten art galleries on campus with varied programming and exhibits change throughout the year. Current and past exhibitions include MFA students exploring their role as artists, undergraduate thesis shows, works of alumni and faculty, paintings of San Francisco cityscapes, video installations, and more.
Awards
In January 2010, the Chronicle of Higher Education named the Academy of Art University as the country’s top art school based on enrollment numbers. In 2010, Academy received a “Green” rating from BusinessWeek in its annual rankings of the nation’s greenest colleges. According to the yearly survey by
While in the top 10% of art schools in all three categories, the school received its highest ranking in the sustainability category, illustrating a high energy efficiency level. The school has won many national awards for its unique offerings and is considered one of the leading art colleges on the West Coast.
Academy of Art University has had over 3500 alumni since 2010.
