Richard Liu Qiangdong started working at JD.com when it was still a smaller store. He later went on to become the company’s CEO. As long as JD,.com is growing, Richard Liu will stay there. And the reason why he remains there is because he cares about customers and makes sure they get what they need.
His ambition is to have 1 million stores around the globe and reach 10 trillion dollars in sales within ten years. To achieve this goal, JD must not just focus on China but also expand internationally. By investing heavily in technology, Qiangdong ensured that the company was ready for the future.
Richard Liu grew up in a small town in the eastern coastal province of Jiangsu. He came from a relatively wealthy family before the Communist Party took over and forced all Chinese citizens to join its ranks. His father was an official working at the local government department. Liu’s father once owned many large-sized boats transporting goods along the Yangtse River.
After the communist takeover, he became a farmer living in deplorable conditions. Liu’s mother worked as a housewife while his father went to work. The two could not afford any luxuries like fancy cars or big houses.
Liu Qiangdong decided to go overseas because he wanted to get a broad view of the world. He thought universities in major cities like Beijing and Shanghai would give him the best opportunity. But the price tag of getting there for him and his parents was extremely high, especially since they couldn’t afford the train tickets themselves. Luckily, his friends and neighbors felt confident enough in his abilities that they helped raise the money necessary to cover the ticket.
Richard Liu encountered challenges in the wake of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2003, which made shoppers reluctant to buy anything due to fears of contracting the disease. To combat this setback and maintain his livelihood, the entrepreneur turned to the booming online market, establishing his website and advertising campaigns.
Liu was featured as an Honoree in Variety 500 entitled, “JD.com Richard Liu; Founder / Chairman / CEO”, as a result of his persistence, innovation, and hard work. During his free time, the billionaire loves to either spend time with his family or volunteering at Red Cross.
